Expensive joining operations can be saved by explosive forming because complex and large shapes can be formed in one piece. Even larger and more complex shapes can be formed by welding the sheets prior to forming. The properties of an explosive formed weld are very good.

Explosive forming was applied frequently for space- and aerospace structures in the third quarter of the 20th century.

	Fighter plane part Complicated shape with integrated features. Scaled model to be made in 2x3 meters.
	Heat expansion panel Material: PM1000
	Lobe mixer Model of an exhaust mixer to be made in 1 meter diameter. The mixer is formed in one piece.
	Isogrid panel Panel formed from pre-machined aluminium.
	Pre-welded duct Formed from 1mm Inconel 625. Formed in one piece improving the mechanical properties of the weld.
